Spotify retires its Android widget for some reason

It's a sad day for widget lovers around the world. Although the main widgets are a unique feature of Android, Spotify decided that they no longer want to support the widget. Today's update completely removes the widget, a step that some users are uncomfortable with.

The fact that Spotify was first discovered was discovered by 9to5Google, suggesting a support post on Spotify Community. This posting is effective as of August 8th, as the Spotify Community Manager indicated that the widget will be canceled during the week. That day, Spotify pushed an update to version 8.5 that completely removes the widget.

Spotify doesn't give a reason for dragging the gadget, but instead indicates that Android listeners are using playback controls that appear in the Android notification menu or on the lock screen. In this post, the Spotify admin instructs users who want to return the gadget to vote on in a separate objective idea. Although this idea thread has more than 3,100 votes at the time of writing, Spotify identified its status as Not Now.

“We put this idea on Not Now, because that's not something we have any immediate plans to relaunch,” the company wrote. "We appreciate you sharing your thoughts." So, at least for now, Spotify on Android looks really good.

A quick look at the Spotify routine shows that few users are dissatisfied with the move, and it is not difficult to know why. As 9to5Google points out, most major competitors for Spotify offer Android widgets for their apps, including Apple Music. We'll see if Spotify will come back sometime in the future, but that doesn't look good at the moment.
